What Is Assistive Technology

Assistive technology, sometimes referred to as adaptive technology, includes devices or equipment used to maintain, increase or enhance the skills of persons with disabilities. 

It is important to understand that assistive technology is not just a computer program or an electronic device. Assistive technology is an application of modern technology that makes it easier for persons with disabilities to live their lives independently and safely.

Assistive technology is available today to support many common disabilities.  For example, assistive technology can:

o Help people who have difficulty accessing the computer using a standard keyboard and mouse. This includes software programs such as screen readers or on-screen keyboards and hardware such as mouse heads.

o Offer exercises that stimulate training and evaluate cognitive function.

o Support daily life such as cooking, dressing, toilet, bathing, eating

o Support for hearing or visual impairments such as blinking doorbell light system, hearing aids and accompanying TV set-top box.

o Provide mobility aids such as wheelchairs, walkers, and canes.

o Enable persons with disabilities to participate in sports or recreational activities.

o Supports the musculoskeletal system and maintains the position necessary to perform the desired activity, such as molded chairs, lumbar supports, and modified wheelchairs fall into this category.
